China expands RV campsite network to support booming camper‑van market
China’s recreational‑vehicle market has surged past 200,000 registered camper vans, while the country has only about 3,000 official campsites. To close the gap, nine government bodies led by the Ministry of Commerce announced sweeping measures that call on local authorities to streamline road‑management rules and designate dedicated RV spaces in new or renovated urban parking lots.
Pilot projects in Jiangsu Province, especially in the city of Yangzhou, are converting idle parking lots into fully equipped campsites. The Peacock Mountain Campsite, transformed from a regular lot, now offers 130 spaces with power, water and service centres. The plan calls for a network of dedicated RV hubs around major scenic spots and aims to accelerate approvals and reduce land‑acquisition costs. Local manufacturing is also being leveraged, with 10 % of the nation’s camper vans produced in the pilot regions to help fund infrastructure development.
