China faces AI chip shortage as tech firms turn to Nvidia

Chinese technology companies are increasingly purchasing Nvidia chips designed for gaming and workstations to meet the country’s surging demand for artificial intelligence computing power. This trend comes as domestic firms struggle to satisfy the massive scale of China’s AI infrastructure deployment.

Despite Beijing’s efforts to encourage local alternatives and reduce reliance on American technology, Nvidia remains a critical player. While Chinese manufacturers like Huawei, Alibaba, Baidu, and Cambricon have more than doubled their domestic AI chip production this year, demand continues to outpace supply.

Industry estimates suggest that while domestic and imported supply may reach approximately 3.5 million AI chips this year, total demand is expected to exceed 5 million. This shortage highlights the ongoing tension between China’s strategic goal to lead in AI and the current limitations of its domestic semiconductor capabilities.
