China floods cause deadly vehicle accident in Guangxi and widespread damage across Guizhou, Chongqing and Hunan

On May 16, a gray pickup truck carrying 15 casual farm laborers attempted to cross a low‑water bridge over the Dahuan River in Yongquan Village, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The vehicle was swept away by the fast‑flowing water, drowning ten people and leaving five survivors who used improvised floatation devices. Over 700 rescuers recovered the bodies and the truck, and Guangxi authorities announced an emergency review of similar crossings.

A week later, heavy rain and unplanned releases from several reservoirs triggered severe flooding on June 7 in southern China. The deluge affected Guizhou’s Zunyi, Tongren, Chongqing’s Hechuan, and Hunan’s Xiangxi, washing away houses, vehicles and crops, and leaving many residents stranded or swept away. The floods were accompanied by large hailstorms that caused additional agricultural loss across the region.
