China foreign trade reaches 30.13 trillion yuan in first seven months of 2026

China's foreign trade data for the first seven months of 2026 shows a total import and export value of 30.13 trillion yuan, representing a 17.3% year-on-year increase. During this period, exports rose 14% to 17.44 trillion yuan, while imports increased 22% to 12.69 trillion yuan.

Growth in the export sector has been heavily driven by green technology and high-tech products. Specifically, exports of electric vehicles grew by 71.2%, lithium batteries by 35.8%, and wind turbine units by 34.8%. Mechanical and electrical products accounted for 63.8% of total exports.

However, recent monthly data from July 2026 indicates a slowdown. While annual growth remains positive, the year-on-year increases for both exports ($397.85 billion) and imports ($285.35 billion) fell below market expectations. Economic indicators suggest signs of manufacturing weakness, with the manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) contracting for the first time in five months. Additionally, the Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 3.5% in July, while the gap between rising input costs and stable output prices has placed pressure on mid-stream manufacturing profits.
