China freezes new energy storage battery factory licenses

Chinese authorities have implemented a temporary freeze on new licenses for energy storage battery factories. This regulatory move aims to evaluate the industry's current and planned production capacity to mitigate the risk of massive overcapacity.

While demand for batteries remains high due to renewable energy integration and international orders, officials fear that rapid expansion could lead to a supply glut similar to what occurred in the photovoltaic sector. Projects currently under construction are expected to proceed, but new projects that have not yet begun foundation work are frozen indefinitely.

Industry projections suggest significant growth, with Envision Energy noting plans for over 800 GWh of additional capacity by 2026. If realized, total capacity could reach between 1.2 and 1.5 TWh, heightening concerns regarding market sustainability and price volatility.
