China gains influence as U.S. tariffs drive global trade diversification

U.S. trade policies under President Donald Trump, characterized by the frequent use of tariffs as political tools, are driving global partners toward economic diversification with China.

In Canada, recent trade disputes have led to 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of goods, prompting Ottawa to implement retaliatory measures and strengthen economic ties with Beijing. Similar trends are emerging in Africa, where China has removed import duties on goods from all 53 African nations, and in major economies like Brazil and India, which are seeking alternative markets to mitigate the impact of American tariffs.

While China maintains its own protective measures, such as quotas and duties on beef, its role as a stable economic alternative is gaining traction in the Global South as nations seek to reduce reliance on the American economic system.
