China GDP grows 4.5% in third quarter driven by tech exports

China's economy expanded by 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter, exceeding market expectations of 4.4%. This growth brings the nine-month expansion to 4.6%, positioning the country to meet its annual growth target of between 4.5% and 5%.

The economic performance reveals a “two-speed economy” characterized by robust high-tech exports offsetting sluggish domestic consumption and a struggling property sector. While manufacturing and technology exports remain strong, internal demand remains a challenge. The real estate sector continues to weigh on the economy, with investment dropping 20.2% during the first nine months of the year.

Mao Shengyong, vice minister of the National Bureau of Statistics, noted that growth was achieved “with great effort” and “under pressure,” citing a complex and volatile international environment and the ongoing issue of insufficient domestic demand.
