China GDP grows 4.5% in Q3 driven by robust exports

China's economy grew by 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, exceeding market expectations of 4.4%. This acceleration from the 4.3% growth recorded in the second quarter was primarily fueled by strong exports, particularly in high-tech sectors like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and lithium-ion batteries.

Despite the uptick in GDP, domestic economic indicators reveal significant imbalances. While industrial production rose 5.5% in September and retail sales increased by 1.1%, the property sector continues to struggle. Property development investment fell 20.6% during the first nine months of the year, reflecting a prolonged real estate crisis that has weighed on household wealth and domestic demand.

Fixed-asset investment also saw a cumulative decline of 7.2% in the first nine months. The National Bureau of Statistics noted that while the economy has maintained steady development, the international environment remains volatile and domestic demand remains insufficient. The 4.5% growth rate keeps China on track to meet its official annual target of between 4.5% and 5%.
