US-China AI competition intensifies amid data leaks and censorship

The global artificial intelligence landscape is marked by intense competition and regulatory divergence between the United States and China. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reported that China’s Kimi model, developed by Moonshot AI, has inadvertently leaked Chinese military weapon plans to Anthropic’s Claude model. Bessent noted that Kimi has also misidentified itself as Claude, suggesting the use of “industrial distillation” to replicate American technology.

In China, generative AI usage has surged, with users exceeding 700 million by mid-2026. However, research into Alibaba’s Qwen model reveals embedded censorship regarding sensitive political topics, such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and the status of Uyghur populations. Meanwhile, Chinese regulations now require chatbots to disclose their synthetic nature to users every two hours to prevent dependency.

In the commercial sector, Meta Platforms is seeing rapid adoption of its Muse AI agent, which has surpassed 5 million downloads. While Shopify has embraced the agent for e-commerce, Amazon has blocked it from its platform. This highlights a growing divide in how major tech entities integrate agentic AI into consumer shopping experiences.
