King Abdullah II begins state visit to China to boost economic ties

King Abdullah II of Jordan has commenced a state visit to China from August 18 to 24, following an invitation from President Xi Jinping. This marks the King's ninth visit to the country since his accession to the throne.

The visit aims to deepen the strategic partnership between Jordan and China, with a heavy emphasis on economic cooperation. Discussions are expected to cover bilateral relations, regional stability, and international issues. The King is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji. The itinerary also includes visits to Shanghai and Shenzhen, where the King will meet with representatives from major Chinese corporations to explore investment opportunities.

Key areas for expanded cooperation include artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, green development, the digital economy, energy, and tourism. Jordanian officials have expressed hope that the visit will facilitate a transition from a purely import-based relationship to one involving joint manufacturing. This diplomatic engagement occurs amidst regional tensions in the Middle East, as Jordan seeks to diversify its international partnerships while maintaining its strategic alliance with the United States.
