China identifies Indonesia as strategic anchor for ASEAN partnership

China has identified Indonesia as a strategic “anchor” for ASEAN, aiming to strengthen the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. During a commemoration in Jakarta, Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN Wang Qing highlighted Indonesia's vital role in regional connectivity and investment, citing successful projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway and the Two Countries, Twin Parks (TCTP) scheme.

Economic ties between Indonesia and China have seen significant growth, with bilateral trade reaching $154.58 billion in 2025, a 13.2 percent increase. On the security front, China has expressed readiness to deepen defense and security cooperation with Indonesia. Following high-level meetings between Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chinese officials, both nations have agreed to enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime, maritime security, and protecting major shipping lanes.
