Arunachal Pradesh: ITBP Chief confirms ongoing India-China face-offs

Shatrujeet Kapur, Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), has confirmed that military face-offs between Indian and Chinese forces are continuing at multiple locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. The confrontations, which have been occurring since at least July 2026, are reportedly centered in sectors such as Taksing, Maza, and Asaphila within the Upper Subansiri district.

Local tribal organizations, including the Nah Welfare Society, have alleged that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has expanded its presence by building roads, bridges, and military camps in areas traditionally used by local communities for grazing and agriculture. While the Indian Army previously dismissed reports of Chinese encroachment as baseless, the ITBP chief’s recent on-record statements provide official acknowledgment of the persistent tension.

In response to the situation, India is reinforcing its presence and deploying specialized units like the Shaurya Commandos. The ITBP chief also highlighted a critical need for modernization, noting that current weaponry is approximately 50 years old. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry has maintained that Beijing has strictly followed all relevant agreements and accords regarding border management.
