China implements stricter exit controls and travel restrictions

China is implementing new exit control regulations, scheduled to take effect on September 15, which grant border authorities expanded powers to monitor and restrict the movement of citizens. Reports indicate that these measures are already being felt at major transit hubs like Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Travelers have reported being required to complete extensive exit registration forms covering personal finances, social media activity, and overseas connections. Some passengers have reported being denied boarding or having their mobile devices inspected by authorities.

Beyond airport controls, there are reports of difficulties regarding passport renewals at overseas consulates and instances of collective restrictions, such as a university reportedly banning all students from leaving the country due to a single student's actions. The policy shift reflects a broader strategic move to tighten control over people and knowledge considered strategically important to the state.
