China gold imports hit record 1,141 tons through August
China is importing gold at a record pace, with imports from January to August reaching 1,141 tons. This figure represents a 72% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and has already surpassed the total amount imported during the entire previous year.
Analysts suggest this massive accumulation, alongside a reduction in US debt holdings to an 18-year low of $618.8 billion, indicates a long-term strategy to diversify reserves by substituting US dollars with gold. This move is seen as a precaution against potential US sanctions. To support this, Beijing established an offshore gold deposit in Hong Kong in 2025 to enable yuan-denominated transactions outside the dollar system.
The value of these gold imports rose to $158.8 billion in 2026, a 65% increase over 2025. While jewelry demand remains relatively weak, investment demand is driving the surge. Heraeus analysts project that if current trends continue, total imports for 2026 could reach approximately 1,700 tons.
