European automotive market sees 10.2% growth in September
The European automotive market experienced a 10.2% increase in registrations in September, reaching 1,363,210 units. For the first nine months of the year, total registrations rose by 6.3% to over 10.5 million units. Major markets including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany all reported growth during the month.
Despite the overall volume increase, the transition to electric vehicles (EV) remains uneven. In Italy, battery electric vehicles (BEV) accounted for only 7.6% of sales in September, significantly lower than the European average of 33.2%. When including plug-in hybrids (PHEV), Italy's total electric vehicle share stood at 18.8%, trailing behind France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, where shares exceed 45%.
In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy, vehicle registrations rose by 9.6% during the first nine months of 2026. Local operators noted that much of this growth is driven by corporate fleets, rental services, and “zero-kilometer” sales rather than a surge in private consumer demand.
