China adds nearly 20 tonnes to gold reserves in July
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) increased its official gold reserves by approximately 19.9 tonnes in July 2026. This marks the central bank's largest monthly purchase since October 2023 and extends a consistent gold-buying streak that has now lasted 21 consecutive months.
China's total gold reserves have reached a record 2,366 tonnes, with year-to-date acquisitions estimated at 60 tonnes. Analysts suggest this persistent accumulation is part of a strategic effort to diversify foreign exchange reserves and reduce reliance on the US dollar, a process often referred to as de-dollarization.
This trend coincides with a broader global movement, as other central banks also seek to increase gold holdings to hedge against geopolitical uncertainty and currency fluctuations. Concurrently, China is working to strengthen Hong Kong's role as an international hub for gold trading and storage.
