China orders massive recall of 4.3 million vehicles over door handle safety
China has launched a massive automotive recall involving approximately 4.3 million electric vehicles due to safety concerns regarding electronic door handles. The recall affects nine manufacturers, including Tesla, Xiaomi, Leapmotor, XPeng, and Geely. The primary issue is that flush or hidden door handles can be difficult for occupants to locate or operate during emergencies, particularly if the vehicle loses electrical power following a collision.
Tesla is the most affected manufacturer, with nearly 3 million vehicles—including Model 3, Y, S, and X models—included in the recall. To address the issue, Tesla will install visible warning labels in vehicle cabins and deploy a software update to automatically lower windows in the event of a crash. Other manufacturers are also required to implement similar corrective measures.
In response to these safety risks, Chinese regulators have announced new standards. Starting in 2027, new vehicle models will be prohibited from using external electronic handles that lack a traditional manual override mechanism. Additionally, automakers must submit proactive recall plans and safety inspection reports to local authorities by the end of 2026. While the recall is centered in China, European regulators, such as the Netherlands' RDW, are monitoring the situation to determine if similar safety reviews are necessary for the European market.
