China injects $54 billion into state banks and insurers
China's Ministry of Finance is leading a massive 360 billion yuan ($54 billion) capital injection into eight major state-owned financial institutions. This coordinated effort aims to bolster the country's financial system, enhance risk resilience, and support the real economy amid economic challenges such as low interest rates and a slowing property market.
The capital distribution targets three major state banks and five insurance groups. The Agricultural Bank of China is set to receive up to 160 billion yuan, while the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is targeting up to 100 billion yuan, both through private A-share placements. The Export-Import Bank of China will also receive 30 billion yuan.
In the insurance sector, China Life Insurance will receive 35 billion yuan, and China Taiping Insurance Group will receive 7 billion yuan. Other recipients include People's Insurance Company of China (PICC), which plans to raise up to 15 billion yuan, China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure), receiving 10 billion yuan, and China Reinsurance, which intends to raise 3 billion yuan. This marks the first time Beijing has extended such a large-scale recapitalization to the insurance sector in nearly two decades.
