U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Chinese satellite imagery and geospatial data have directly enhanced Iran’s ability to conduct precise military strikes and threaten maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. According to intelligence sources, this support enabled Iran to target a U.S. base in Jordan in July, an attack that resulted in the deaths of three American service members with a level of precision officials believe would have been unattainable without Chinese data.

Furthermore, Chinese geospatial information has reportedly allowed Iranian forces to track vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, facilitating the timing of drone and missile attacks. This data assists in the use of relatively simple heat-seeking drones by helping operators identify optimal launch windows to intercept thermal signatures of ships.

While officials note that Russian support and Iran’s growing combat experience also contribute to its military effectiveness, the Chinese intelligence role helps explain the increasing accuracy of Iranian strikes. It remains unclear whether the Chinese government explicitly ordered this support or is providing it implicitly. This intelligence assistance has contributed to new Iranian tactics, prompting U.S. Central Command to reposition personnel and equipment in response to damage sustained at regional bases.
