China intensifies diplomatic and transnational pressure on Taiwan

China is employing a multi-faceted strategy to isolate Taiwan, utilizing both diplomatic sanctions and alleged transnational repression. Beijing has recently targeted officials in countries that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, such as Belize and Paraguay, as a means of deterrence. These sanctions, aimed at figures like Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca and Paraguayan official Gustavo Villate, are viewed as political intimidation rather than measures with significant economic impact.

Simultaneously, Taiwanese authorities are investigating potential links between local organized crime groups and Chinese-directed operations. The National Security Bureau is examining whether criminal networks and private investigative firms are being used to carry out repression against political opponents and critics within Taiwan. This internal security concern follows incidents such as attacks on satirists and activists.

These activities coincide with an increased Chinese maritime presence in the waters surrounding Taiwan, including patrols by the Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels, further complicating the security landscape in the Taiwan Strait.
