China has established a permanent naval presence around Taiwan, regularly stationing five to six guided‑missile destroyers as part of a long‑term strategy to deter the island and prepare for possible conflict. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence reported heightened activity on June 20, 2026, detecting five PLA aircraft, nine PLAN vessels and five official ships operating around the island, including one sortie that crossed the median line into Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ. Earlier in the week the ministry had recorded eight Chinese naval vessels in its waters.
