China intensifies pressure on Japan over security and nuclear policy

China has intensified diplomatic, military, and economic pressure on Japan following remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a potential ‘Taiwan contingency.’ Analysts suggest Beijing’s campaign aims to weaken the U.S.-led security order in Asia by portraying Japan as a returning militaristic power, thereby undermining the U.S.-Japan alliance.

Specifically, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has criticized Takaichi’s recent comments regarding Japan’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles. The PLA noted that her phrasing—stating Japan is ‘currently adhering to’ the principles rather than explicitly affirming a continued commitment—suggests a potential shift away from postwar anti-nuclear policy. The PLA warned that if Japan continues to ‘play with fire’ regarding nuclear issues, the historical tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could recur.

Beijing’s strategy appears to use Japan as a warning to other nations against challenging China’s position on Taiwan. While China seeks to expand its regional influence, experts note that this pressure may backfire by strengthening international support for Japan’s defense buildup and closer security cooperation with allies.
