China interest rises among Italian students

A new study conducted by Fondazione Intercultura ets and Ipsos-Doxa reveals a significant shift in the study abroad preferences of Italian adolescents. Interest in China as a destination for educational mobility has risen from 29% in 2017 to 45% in 2026, while interest in the United States has declined from 84% to 72%.

Key drivers for this interest in China include technological innovation (45%), access to emerging markets (44%), and the desire to learn the Chinese language (37%). Additionally, positive sentiment toward China has increased from 54% to 88%.

The research, presented in Rome, highlights that international mobility helps students develop essential non-cognitive and transversal skills. The study also notes that 21% of students first encountered Chinese culture through school textbooks or teacher-led activities.
