China introduces new legislation for Antarctic research and environmental protection

Chinese legislators have begun reviewing a draft law focused on activities in Antarctica and environmental protection. The bill, presented for its third reading to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, aims to strengthen the management of scientific research and enhance environmental safeguards in the Antarctic region.

The latest version of the draft law mandates that China establish and improve a system for Antarctic expeditions and increase the regulation of related activities. It also includes provisions emphasizing China's commitment to global governance initiatives, sovereign equality, and international rule of law. The legislation seeks to promote multilateralism and active participation in the formulation of international Antarctic governance norms.
