China issues travel warning for Thailand amid kidnapping spike

The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has issued an urgent travel advisory for its citizens visiting Thailand, citing a rise in cross-border kidnappings orchestrated by transnational criminal syndicates. The warning specifically highlights that content creators, actors, models, and social media influencers are being targeted through fraudulent high-paying job offers, such as fake casting calls or production contracts.

Criminal networks reportedly lure victims to Bangkok before smuggling them across the border into forced-labor scam enclaves in Myanmar. Recent incidents include the abduction of a photographer in October 2026 and a music teacher in late September 2026. The embassy noted a previous case involving actor Wang Xing, who was trafficked into Myanmar scam compounds after accepting a film role.

To mitigate risks, consular officials advise travelers to use only licensed transportation, decline rides arranged by third parties, and refuse unannounced changes to travel routes. Travelers are also urged to keep family members informed of their whereabouts at all times.
