China J-35 fighter jet displays new reflective stealth coating

Recent photographs of the Chinese J-35 fifth-generation fighter jet reveal a highly reflective, silvery surface finish that deviates from the standard matte gray typically seen on stealth aircraft. This unusual appearance suggests that China may be testing new specialized coatings designed to reduce visibility to advanced sensors.

The J-35, which entered service in 2025 for both the Chinese Air Force and Navy, is being deployed with aircraft carrier groups, including the Fujian. With the J-35 in serial production, China has become the first nation to simultaneously operate two types of fifth-generation fighters, alongside the J-20.

Observers have noted similarities between this reflective coating and experimental finishes previously seen on American F-22A Raptor and F-35C Lightning II aircraft. While the exact purpose of such coatings remains undisclosed, they are speculated to relate to radar signature management, infrared detection, thermal control, or laser interaction.
