China-Japan air travel contracts amid diplomatic tensions

Air travel between China and Japan has seen a sharp contraction due to deteriorating bilateral relations. In August 2026, reports indicated that 1,120 flights were canceled and 18 routes were suspended, representing a cancellation rate exceeding 30 percent. This follows a similar trend in June, where the cancellation rate reached 37.5 percent. Major Japanese destinations including Osaka, Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Nagoya have experienced repeated route suspensions.

Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi noted that substantive dialogue with Chinese officials has been largely absent and expressed low expectations for easing tensions following the upcoming APEC meeting in Shenzhen. The diplomatic strain is attributed in part to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s assertive stance on Taiwan and defense expansion.

While Chinese media has suggested that the decline in Chinese tourists is causing significant economic hardship for Japan’s tourism industry, data indicates that overall inbound tourism spending in Japan remains stable. Although Chinese visitor numbers have decreased, increased spending from other international tourists has helped offset the impact, preventing a broader collapse of the Japanese inbound market.
