China launches AI systems for geological mapping and mineral exploration
The China Geological Survey, under the Ministry of Natural Resources, has unveiled two new artificial intelligence systems designed for geological mapping and mineral exploration: ‘AI-GeoMapping’ and ‘AI-OreSeeking’. The announcement was made during the 28th China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin.
These systems represent a shift from traditional field work reliant on specialist expertise to data-driven predictions using algorithms. Developed over a decade, the integrated intelligent systems aim to secure supplies of critical minerals by improving the identification of mineral indicators and target exploration areas.
According to Li Fengdan, an official at the China Geological Survey, the technology addresses long-standing field challenges such as rugged terrain, inaccessible areas, and limited rock exposure in deserts or swamps. The system integrates satellite imagery, airborne geophysical surveys, and field observations, achieving up to 90% accuracy in identifying geological features and more than doubling data processing efficiency compared to conventional methods.
