China intensifies crackdown on fraudulent environmental monitoring

China is intensifying efforts to combat fraudulent practices within environmental monitoring agencies. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment, led by Minister Huang Runqiu, has announced a coordinated crackdown involving multiple government departments to ensure the credibility of environmental data.

The campaign will be implemented in three distinct phases: identifying industry-wide issues, executing corrective measures, and establishing standardized operating procedures. Monitoring agencies will be required to conduct internal audits and compile lists of identified problems. Authorities will target inaccurate, omitted, or concealed communications, as well as superficial or fictitious corrective actions.

To strengthen oversight, the ministry will improve routine supervision, accelerate the introduction of management regulations, and utilize an environmental monitoring management and service platform. This initiative follows the implementation of the country’s ecological and environmental code, which explicitly prohibits interfering with sampling, replacing samples, or altering monitoring conditions.
