China launches first satellites for space‑based AI computing network

Shanghai Xingshu Tiansuan Space Technology, a Chinese aerospace firm, has placed its inaugural satellites into orbit, marking the first step of a planned 1,000‑satellite constellation that will function as a space‑based computing network. The system is designed to process artificial‑intelligence workloads and remote‑sensing data directly in orbit, sending only final results to ground stations, which could cut latency, reduce bandwidth demand and lessen the load on terrestrial data‑center infrastructure.

The launch coincided with President Xi Jinping’s appearance at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, underscoring China’s push to integrate AI and space technology. If completed, the network would become one of the world’s largest orbital computing platforms, offering commercial services for government and private users and potentially reshaping satellite data analytics and disaster‑response capabilities.
