China launches regular Arctic container shipping route to Europe

China has launched its first regular container trade route through the Arctic, utilizing the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to connect major industrial hubs with Europe. This strategic move, authorized by the Kremlin, aims to diversify trade paths and reduce reliance on traditional routes such as the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Mediterranean Sea.

The shipping company Sea Legend is working to establish a regular service with weekly departures through early October. A recent voyage involving the vessel Dubai Tower departed from the port of Ningbo, China, destined for Europe. This Arctic route can complete the journey between Ningbo and Felixstowe, UK, in approximately 20 days, which is nearly half the time required by conventional routes.

According to Fang Yi, director of Haijie Shipping, the route offers advantages including protection for temperature-sensitive cargo from summer heat, avoidance of traffic congestion, and more reliable schedules. The route connects Chinese ports like Ningbo and Nansha to European destinations including Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Gdynia.
