China launches year‑long deepening crackdown on black‑evil crime, targeting online platforms

The Chinese central authorities have announced a nationwide, one‑year "deepening sweep against black and evil forces" that will begin in July 2026. The campaign expands earlier anti‑crime efforts by focusing on organized crime that uses internet platforms and "soft‑violence" tactics such as online extortion, illegal lending, fake news manipulation and coordinated harassment.

Officials say the move aims to protect public safety, sustain social stability and support President Xi Jinping’s leadership as China pursues high‑quality development. Data from 2025 showed a 12.8 % drop in criminal cases and high public satisfaction with previous anti‑crime measures, but authorities argue that new, more covert forms of crime require a stronger, technology‑focused response. The Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission will oversee the operation, which will also target traditional criminal groups such as village and mining “bosses” and networks involved in drugs, gambling and prostitution.
