China leads global electrification competitiveness index

A new Electrification Competitiveness Index, developed by the We Mean Business Coalition with support from RMI, reveals that China is expanding its lead in global electrification. China achieved the highest deployment score due to coordinated grid investments, industrial policies, and incentives. France and Spain were also categorized as having a 'solid foundation' due to strong grid performance and clean power shares.

In contrast, the United States is identified as facing a 'risk of stalling.' While deployment remains at or above the midpoint, the US faces potential momentum loss due to federal policy reversals and grid bottlenecks, with over 2 terawatts of generation and storage capacity currently awaiting grid connection.

Other nations were categorized by their progress: Germany, India, Italy, Poland, and the UK show 'potential for take-off' where enabling conditions outpace actual deployment. Meanwhile, Indonesia, the Philippines, and South Africa are in the 'early stages' of electrification, with grid investments in the latter two falling below 0.4% of GDP.
