Global industrial robot stock hits record 5 million units

The global operational stock of industrial robots reached a record 5 million units in 2025, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). This 9% year-on-year increase was driven by an 11% rise in annual installations, with over 600,000 new units deployed worldwide.

China remains the dominant leader in the sector, accounting for 59% of global deployments. In 2025, China installed 354,000 industrial robots, a 20% increase from the previous year. The demand in China is primarily driven by the electronics, automotive, and machinery industries.

The United States has become the second-largest market, installing approximately 38,500 units, a 12% increase. This growth moved Japan to the third position, as its installations fell by 19% to roughly 36,200 units. South Korea also saw a slight decline in installations.

In contrast, the European market experienced a contraction. Total installations in Europe fell by 14% to 73,000 units. Germany remains the largest European market despite an 8% decline, while Italy and Spain also reported decreases in robot adoption.

The IFR forecasts continued growth, predicting that annual installations will reach 655,000 units in 2026 and potentially 806,000 units by 2029, fueled by demographic shifts and the need for resilient supply chains.
