China legal cases highlight risks of elderly entrusting savings to family
Legal disputes in China highlight the risks elderly citizens face when entrusting savings to family members. In Tianjin, an 80-year-old man named Mr. Liu sued his son and daughter-in-law after they withdrew his entire 200,000 NDT retirement fund and transferred it to another relative's account. The Baodi District Court ruled that the arrangement constituted a property custody contract, ordering the couple to return the full amount.
A similar incident occurred in Shanghai, where an 88-year-old woman, Ms. Ma, was persuaded by her daughter to hand over bank cards and savings books. The daughter subsequently withdrew over 1.21 million NDT before placing her mother in a nursing home. The court eventually ordered the daughter to repay the remaining 300,000 NDT.
These cases underscore the importance of timing and caution when parents provide financial support to adult children, emphasizing that such assistance should not jeopardize their own retirement security.
