By maintaining a balance between opposing factions, Beijing seeks to protect its long-term national interests and consolidate its global position without direct involvement.

Analyses suggest that China, along with North Korea and Iran, aligns its interests with Russia to serve specific national goals. For Beijing, a prolonged conflict in Ukraine serves to divert the attention, budgets, and military resources of the United States and its European allies away from the South China Sea and Taiwan. This allows China to strengthen its regional influence while Western military assets are occupied in the European theater.
