Australia electric vehicle sales surpass petrol cars for the first time
In August 2026, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Australia reached a historic milestone, surpassing petrol-powered vehicle sales for the first time. According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), BEV deliveries totaled 27,089 units, representing a 24.9% market share and a 171% increase compared to August 2025.
The shift in consumer preference is accompanied by a significant rise in the dominance of Chinese manufacturers. Chinese-made vehicles captured 40.4% of the Australian market in August, ending a 28-year period of Japanese brand dominance. Notable performers include BYD, which ranked as the second best-selling brand with 8,231 units, and Geely, which saw sales growth exceeding 1,000%.
Tesla's Model Y remained the top-selling individual vehicle model in the country. While Toyota maintains its position as the overall leading automotive brand, the rapid transition toward electrification is reshaping the competitive landscape. Experts note that the surge is partly driven by rising fuel costs, though concerns remain regarding the adequacy of public charging infrastructure to support this growth.
