China maintains benchmark lending rates for 17th consecutive month

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has maintained its benchmark lending rates unchanged for the 17th consecutive month. The one-year loan prime rate (LPR) remains at 3.00%, while the five-year LPR is held at 3.50%.

This decision follows a third-quarter GDP expansion of 4.5%, which met market expectations and reduced the immediate pressure for further monetary easing. The stability in rates suggests a focus on reforming the loan pricing framework rather than immediate stimulus.

PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng indicated that the central bank is exploring reforms to diversify lending benchmarks. This includes a proposal to allow financially strong companies to use an overnight interbank repo rate as an alternative to the LPR for floating-rate loans. Additionally, the central bank is studying a shift in its main policy rate anchor toward an overnight rate to improve monetary policy transmission.
