China: Man regains ability to swallow after strokes using popsicle therapy

A 44-year-old man in China, identified as Mr. Zhao, has regained the ability to eat and drink following a breakthrough in his rehabilitation process. After suffering two strokes—one in 2020 and another in July—Zhao was left with severe dysphagia, making it impossible for him to chew or swallow food without choking.

Traditional rehabilitation methods had shown limited success due to the severity of his brain damage. However, medical professionals observed that cold stimulation caused his larynx to lift. To enhance this reflex, therapists transitioned from using standard ice swabs to providing intense cold combined with strong gustatory stimulation.

By using a fruit-flavored popsicle, clinicians were able to trigger his swallowing reflex through the combination of intense cold and flavor. This method allowed Zhao to successfully chew and swallow, marking a significant milestone in his recovery.
