China manufacturing PMI rises to 49.8 in August

China's manufacturing sector showed signs of recovery in August, with the official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rising to 49.8 from 49.2 in July. Although the figure remains below the 50-point threshold required to signal expansion, the increase exceeded market expectations.

Key sub-indices indicated improvement, as production rose to 50.4 and new orders climbed to 50.6. New export orders also returned to expansionary territory at 50.1. However, the non-manufacturing PMI remained stagnant at 49.0, reflecting continued weakness in the services and construction sectors.

While industrial activity and export demand—particularly in high-tech sectors like semiconductors and electric vehicles—provided support, domestic demand remains a challenge. Analysts suggest that while the manufacturing slump is easing, the overall economic recovery remains uneven.
