China market regulator reports 98.2% pass rate for pastry food safety

The State Administration for Market Regulation reported that the pass rate for pastry food safety sampling in key cultural tourism areas reached 98.2% as of the end of August. This inspection period coincided with the lead-up to the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, when demand for specialty pastries typically increases.

Authorities conducted a total of 1,499 samplings across cultural tourism scenic spots, surrounding areas, and highway service areas. The testing covered various metrics, including food additives (preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and coloring agents), microbial indicators (total plate count and coliform bacteria), quality indicators (peroxide value), and heavy metals such as lead.

The primary non-compliance issues identified were excessive peroxide values and the use of food additives outside of permitted scopes. Local market supervision departments have initiated inspections and handling procedures to control these food safety risks.
