China marks 50 years since the arrest of the Gang of Four
Fifty years ago, on October 6, 1976, the arrest of the political faction known as the Gang of Four marked a decisive turning point in Chinese history. Led by Jiang Qing, the widow of Mao Zedong, the group included Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen. Their removal during a security operation in Beijing signaled the symbolic end of the Cultural Revolution, a decade of intense ideological turmoil and political purges initiated by Mao in 1966.
The Cultural Revolution had caused widespread social and economic disruption, targeting intellectuals, educators, and perceived political opponents through public struggle sessions and the destruction of historical sites. The dismantling of the Gang of Four cleared the political path for leaders like Deng Xiaoping, facilitating a shift away from radical ideology toward the economic reforms that eventually integrated China into the global economy. Jiang Qing was later sentenced to life imprisonment in 1981 after an initial death sentence was commuted.
