China military expansion shifts Asia-Pacific power dynamics

China is rapidly modernizing its military capabilities, including naval expansion, advanced weaponry like hypersonic missiles and stealth fighters, and enhanced space capabilities. These developments are shifting the regional balance of power in the Asia-Pacific and increasing tensions, particularly regarding territorial claims in the South China Sea.

In response to the intensifying US-China rivalry and rising military costs, Southeast Asian nations are reassessing defense procurement. For Malaysia, Chinese military equipment offers an affordable and fast alternative for modernization, as seen with the acquisition of Keris-class Littoral Mission Ships. While these options can bridge capability gaps and improve maritime surveillance, they also present risks of strategic dependence and technological incompatibility with other systems.
