China militia boat spotted off Taiwan’s east coast
A surveillance report from Taiwan’s Apex Aviation has identified the first known sighting of a Chinese maritime militia vessel off Taiwan’s Pacific coast. The vessel, identified as the Minfudingyu 07902, was spotted in mid-August operating alongside a Chinese coast guard cutter and a research vessel.
Taiwan’s defence ministry stated that China is using law enforcement and scientific research as “cover for harassment” to create an “illusion of de facto jurisdiction” during non-conflict scenarios. Officials expressed concern that these activities, which include increased coast guard patrols since June, may be practice for a potential maritime blockade.
Taipei considers the waters off its east coast strategically vital for maintaining wartime supply routes from international allies. The maritime militia typically consists of fishing vessels with trained crews that operate in disputed waters to assist Beijing in asserting maritime claims.
