China missile test sparks regional division in the Pacific

A recent nuclear-capable ballistic missile test by China has intensified concerns regarding militarisation in the Pacific. The July launch, which was China’s first such test in the Pacific since September 2024, occurred shortly after Fiji signed its first major defense treaty with Australia.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa noted that the missile's trajectory crossed the exclusive economic zones and airspace of several member countries. While individual leaders have expressed alarm, the Forum has struggled to issue a collective condemnation because its decision-making process requires total consensus among its 18 members.

Papua New Guinea Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko described the test as ‘totally inappropriate,’ noting that while Beijing provided advance notice, no specific landing details were shared. Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry maintained the test was conducted safely and urged other nations not to ‘over-interpret’ the event. The incident highlights the growing tension in a region increasingly contested by the United States and China.
