China narrows AI technological gap with the United States

China is rapidly closing the technological gap with the United States in the artificial intelligence race. While American companies like OpenAI and Anthropic currently hold the top positions in performance rankings, Chinese models are demonstrating significant advancements in reasoning and programming capabilities.

Recent evaluations show that Chinese models, such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, are achieving performance levels close to leading US models but at a considerably lower cost. This shift toward high-efficiency, low-cost alternatives poses a potential challenge to the high market valuations of US tech firms, which are largely predicated on the expectation of sustained technological superiority.

China’s progress is the result of two decades of strategic investment in research, specialist training, and industrial development. The ecosystem has been bolstered by a strong talent pool, often including researchers returning from US-based firms, and government support for transitioning academic research into commercial enterprises. Despite these gains, China still faces significant hurdles due to US-imposed restrictions on access to advanced semiconductor chips and international capital.
