China narrows AI technological gap with U.S. companies

Recent advancements in Chinese artificial intelligence have significantly narrowed the gap with American companies, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence report. Following the September launch of DeepSeek’s Flash V4.1, the performance gap between leading Chinese models and their U.S. counterparts has shrunk to just 3% in benchmark scores.

This represents a sharp decline from a 9% gap in May and a 15% gap at the start of the year. On the LiveBench indicator, DeepSeek’s Flash V4.1 ranked sixth globally with a score of 81.1, trailing only the top-ranked Fable 5.1 from the American firm Anthropic, which scored 83.4.

While only three Chinese companies—DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Alibaba—have placed models within the global top 15, analysts suggest these gains could lead to increased market share for Chinese platforms. The narrowing margin raises questions regarding the long-term sustainability of U.S. technological supremacy in the sector. This development occurs amid intense competition between Washington and Beijing, with both nations seeking leadership in AI development.
