China: New Bishop ordained under Vatican-Beijing agreement
Ignacio Ding Zuyao was ordained as the Bishop of Haimen in Jiangsu province on October 15. His appointment was approved by the Pope under the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China.
This ordination marks the ninth episcopal appointment conducted under the current pontificate following the 2018 agreement. Ding, 40, previously served as a parish priest in various locations within the Haimen diocese. The ceremony was presided over by Joseph Shen Bin, the Bishop of Shanghai.
The ongoing implementation of the Vatican-China agreement has seen 19 bishops ordained in communion with the Pope. However, observers note that Beijing is increasingly utilizing the agreement to place leaders from the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association at the head of dioceses. This trend is part of a broader effort toward the sinicization of religion, which includes aligning religious practice with state policies and the leadership of the Communist Party.
