European Union pushes digital sovereignty at Rome summit
On 27 July 2026, the European Union held a summit titled “Tecnologia, potere, regole: la nuova partita della sovranità europea” at the Palazzo dell’Informazione in Rome. The event was organized by Open Gate Italia in collaboration with Adnkronos.
Speakers, including Open Gate Italia CEO Laura Rovizzi, agency head Stefania Ducci, and MEP Francesco Torselli, discussed the EU’s drive for digital autonomy. They highlighted the Digital Networks Act, the Tech Sovereignty Package, and a proposed revision of the Cybersecurity Act as key regulatory tools.
According to the Draghi Report on European competitiveness, a large share of the EU’s cloud, network, semiconductor, critical component, and digital‑platform infrastructure relies on non‑EU providers. Participants argued that reducing this dependence requires fostering strong, innovative European operators able to compete globally, thereby increasing the EU’s ability to choose, invest and control its digital future.
