Global EV sales rise 9% in July amid regional market divergence
Global electric vehicle (EV) sales reached 1.85 million units in July, a 9% year-over-year increase, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. While total year-to-date sales hit 11.5 million, regional performance shows significant divergence. Europe saw robust growth with sales rising 33% to 450,000 units, supported by various subsidy schemes. In contrast, North American sales fell 27% to 140,000 units, partly due to the removal of federal tax credits. China's market experienced a 5% decline in July sales to 980,000 units, though it is showing signs of recovery.
In China, new energy vehicles (NEVs) achieved a major milestone, with monthly sales share exceeding 60% for the first time. Additionally, NEV exports from China have consistently accounted for over 50% of total vehicle exports. Leading exporters include BYD, which holds a 32.2% share of China's NEV exports, and Tesla China, which rose to third place with a 12.3% share.
Other regional highlights include a 148.46% year-on-year surge in EV registrations in Malaysia. In Moldova, Geely has emerged as the top brand in the new automobile market for 2026. Meanwhile, Bosch CEO Christian Fischer warned that Western automotive suppliers must accelerate innovation to counter the growing competitive threat from Chinese EV manufacturers.
